New MG 4X crossover brings semi-solid-state batteries

mg 4x front 2 New electric crossover turns MG 4 into a full model family, with a refreshed design language

MG has revealed the new 4X as a chunkier, higher-riding sibling to the existing 4 EV and 4 EV Urban electchatchbacks.

It measures 4.4m long, 1.8m wide and 1.6m tall, according to Chinese media, making it slightly smaller than the S5 EV that's currently offered in the UK.

Indeed, its design is a departure from most recent MG models, moving away from the Cyberster-inspired split-grille front found on the S5, 4 Urban and various ICE models.

Technical details have yet to be confirmed, but MG said all examples of the 4X will be fitted with semi-solid-state batteries. These use solid and liquid-gel electrolytes instead of solely liquid ones, improving energy density and performance in extremely hot or cold weather.

To that end, its 53.95kWh pack will yield a range of 317 miles – although this is according to China’s CLTC test, which typically overestimates EV range.

The 4X’s interior will be revealed in the coming months, bringing digital interfaces developed in partnership with phone maker Oppo.

The third model to be badged as an MG 4, the 4X turns the Chinese brand’s landmark hatchback – once the UK’s cheapest EV – into a full model family.

MG said it's targeting younger buyers in its home market, but it remains to be seen how the 4X will be positioned if it is brought to UK showrooms. The launch of another mid-sized electric crossover may only serve to steal sales from the S5.

Nonetheless, MG is expanding its UK model range at a great pace. It recently launched the 4 Urban and S6 EV and will soon introduce the S9 PHEV.
